Wendy Martinez, Springbrook Parent

Biography

After spending years looking for a place for her son, David, to call home, Wendy Martinez and her family found Springbrook.  David Martinez has developmental disabilities and behavior issues. When David was younger, he attended school two hours from his parents’ home in Patterson, NY.  After a short time of the school district transporting David to and from school, Wendy and her husband were told due to his behavior issues, the school would be unable to transport him.  After self transporting David to and from school, the school informed the Martinez family they would no longer be able to provided services to David. This began the Martinez’s family’s search for a school for a new school.

After spending time look and visiting schools throughout the northeast, the Martinez family found a residential program for David in Massachusetts. Wendy didn’t like the thought of being hours from her son, but knew he needed more than he was getting at home.  A few months after David started school in Mass., the school called, and said the same thing Wendy had heard before, due to David’s issues, they would no longer be able to provide him with services.

After more searching and many sleepless nights thinking of where her son would go, she got a call from Springbrook in 2008 saying they had a spot for David to move in to a house and start school.  Wendy was elated to have her son back in New York State and less than three hours from her.

Wendy stated David has grown so much in the short time he’s been at Springbrook.  She then said, “I can sleep at night because of all of you … and for that, I thank you so, so much.”
