Coming Home - A Campaign and Expansion of Springbrook

In January 2006, Springbrook responded to a Request for Proposal from the New York State Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) for an expansion of our residential school program. 

The request was in response to a New York State Education Department (NYSED) initiative to address the specialized needs of students with disabilities who would otherwise be placed in residential facilities out of state.

There are currently 1000 children with disabilities in out-of-state facilities, with 200 of these children in emergency placements which are not regulated by New York State.  This is due in part to the lack of available residential beds in state.

Springbrook's proposal to expand our residential school is currently under review by NYSED for final approval.  The proposal includes:

• Building six new 4-bedroom houses (3,200 sq. ft./each) to accommodate 24 additional residential students
  
• A teaching and recreation lodge in close proximity to the new houses (4,000 sq. ft.)
  
• A 6 classroom additional to the school (9,500 sq. ft.)
  
• A kitchen and cafeteria additional to the school
  (5,300 sq. ft.)
  
• New Gymnasium
  (8,000 sq. ft.)
  
• New Therapeutic Learning Center (15,000 sq. ft.)

The Campaign

Led by Springbrook board members Douglas Gulotty, President of Wilber Bank, and Elaine Bresee, a well-known and highly respected community leader, this campaign already is down to the last $1.5 million needed toward its $5 million target.

When complete, this expansion program will produce 100 new, well-paying Springbrook jobs adding more than $3 million in new annual salaries to the central New York economy.
