Reaching for the Stars

The TLC class chose the theme "Reach for the Stars" as their summer course of study.  During the six-week summer session, the class learned about the sun, moon, stars, planets and the Milky Way galaxy…and rockets!  Fun-filled lessons included building a seven foot rocket in the classroom, creating three-dimensional stars and making cinnamon-applesauce star and moon ornaments.

The most exciting event by far was a visit from the "Rocket Lady", Mary Peterson, who shared her special interest with two classrooms, and worked with students to build and launch their very own rockets.  She came prepared with plastic bottles and fins, colored tape and nose cones.  Students constructed rockets, choosing their own colors and following Mary’s model.

With their rockets complete, students headed outside to the front lawn of the school, which had been prepared with a large model of Earth and the eight phases of the moon.  Students helped to pump air into the water-powered launcher near the ‘Earth’, and the rockets were sent soaring toward the ‘moon’ one hundred feet away.  The first launch went a bit far, over three hundred feet, and landed in the parking lot.  After a few adjustments the rest of the rockets were quite successful, landing closer to the moon.  Students were excited to experience the power and beauty of flight as each rocket took off.  Afterward, the rockets were gathered and hung in the classroom for a few weeks before the boys took them home.

The TLC class was thrilled to learn so much about space flight and the celestial bodies, particularly fitting during the 40th anniversary of man's first steps on the moon.  The class watched a replay of the historic event that occurred on July 20, 1969, and focused on the vision and commitment that were necessary to make that dream a reality.  Mankind has overcome so many challenges, and that is indeed an inspiration to us all!

Congratulations Graduates!

Wishing all the best to Derrick, Moses and Edwin, the School at Springbrook’s 2009 Graduates, whose achievements were recognized in a commencement ceremony in the school gymnasium on June 4th.

Congrats Grads!

Springbrook Sock Hop: Prom 2009

Students and staff danced the night away at the School at Springbrook on May 15th. This year’s prom had a Sock Hop theme and was held in the school gymnasium, which was adorned with decorations made by each classroom. Donning poodle skirts, leather jackets and other 1950’s attire, those in attendance enjoyed music (oldies of course!) and dancing, as well as a tribute to this year’s graduating seniors. Several parents graciously dressed up and contributed to the theme. A rockin’ good time was had by all!
